Maintaining your garden through the summer

When choosing a property to rent the size of a garden can be a defining factor. You may think ‘the bigger the better’ when it comes to outdoor space, but looking after your garden can be much more work than you think.

Here at OpenArch we have a number of gardeners who carry out weekly maintenance and gardening on properties that we let so you don’t have to, but if you are lucky enough to have a garden within your let, it’s likely that it’ll be within the terms of your Tenancy Agreement to maintain it and keep it neat and tidy.

We advise tenants to ‘see your garden as an extension of your house’ as it’s likely your landlord will stipulate that it must be kept tidy and looked after. Try and do a little weeding every time you’re out in your garden, it only takes a few minutes and saves you hours of hassle down the line.

In the summer months, mow the lawn every couple of weeks and remove dead heads from flowers regularly. This simple process will help flowers regrow and keep them looking beautiful for longer.

If you use garden equipment such as a lawnmower, spade, trowel etc make sure that you keep them somewhere safe, such as a shed or a garage. These outbuildings should be kept secure, with good locks and check your contents insurance will cover you in case anything is stolen.

Whether you choose a small low maintenance garden or a large outdoor, green space make the most of it! Who knows you may even find a hidden passion for gardening that you never knew you had!
